From AC/DC to Yosemite Sam and everything in between, everyone of us has a favorite TV show, movie, song or whatever. Whether it's a dramatic scene in a movie, a lyric to a song, or it's dad's favorite football team each one of us can identify with something that we can relate to in our lives. Welcome to the world of Popular Culture, where we get our identity as a society. Popular culture is everywhere and directs my thoughts, dreams and beliefs on a daily basis. As things change in the world, I make changes to adapt.
Healthcare seems to be a hot topic for our society over the past few years. Certainly popular culture can influence a person's attitude and belief about our current healthcare system. There are books, documentaries and other sources that represent every side of the issue. Using these resources would help me get a better understanding and see a bigger picture of the healthcare system, which would help one make a better decisions.
I thought it would be fitting with the Superbowl coming up, that I chose Superbowl Ads as my artifact. Sometimes I think the ads themselves are more popular than the game. You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy the commercials that are shown before, during and after the game.

David, are you studying healthcare as major? Also, are you excited to see Madonna at the half-time show this year? These are my favorite Super Bowl commercials

David, I agree with what you said about not having to be a fan to like superbowl commercials. Personally I can't stand football. However, once a year I endure the superbowl game with my hubby. The only enjoyment for me are the commercials.
ReplyDeleteI love football and was excited that you picked the super bowl commercials! I always enjoy the commercials and love half-time shows. Healthcare is a huge topic for Americans. I work in healthcare and have felt the changes to law. I think if one person in the United States can have Government insurance we all should should have it. It is hard to see a patient who is older and has worked their whole life, and now are without insurance because they are not old enough for medicare. I don't want to get on this soapbox because I could go forever!
ReplyDeleteSuperbowl commercials are great, I agree! The only thing I find wrong with them is the money that is spent to create them. With the subject of popular culture here, did you ever think that ALL that money could be spent elsewhere? It saddens me to see people losing their jobs they held for 40 years to overse companies and turning to unemployment while millions of dollars are waisted for a one minute commercial. I just don't get it.
ReplyDeleteSuperbowl adds are definitely an artifact!!! I can't imagine the amount of money spent on such a small amount of time.
ReplyDeleteIf one were to look back at the commercials from each Super Bowl, you can see what was a popular business or topic in a given year. For example, in 2002, Budweiser's horses were shown bowing their heads in respect for those lost in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Another example would the the increase of Dot.com companies advertising during the Super Bowl (which now there are very few)
Sometimes I think Superbowl Ads are not for advertising but for entertainment value only or which company can out do the others as far as popularity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that 100%!
ReplyDeleteDavid, you are right with the popularity of healthy care. I just read something the other day on Yahoo where the top two career fields for people to likely find employment right now are 1. Education 2. Healthcare. Are you currently working in the healthcare field, or pursuing a degree in the field?
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the super bowl commercials. I’m not crazy about football, but will sit down and watch the super bowl just because of the commercials. Heather, I agree that the costs for the commercials are ridiculous, but I sure do enjoy laughing. Great Blog David.
